We knew it would be hot. We were warned it would be hot. It IS hot. We arrived at 2:15 pm last Tuesday. Originally planned to be here on Labor Day but Costco stores are few and far between in this part of the country. Last fix was 7 weeks ago in Colorado Springs. Our only option was to stop at the one in Albuquerque (had to learn how to spell this!) and it was closed for the holiday. We had delayed our arrival and spent the night at an RV park west of town next to Camping World.
Where was I? Yes, it was hot when we arrived. The RV campground is small, about six sites, I think. We wandered up to the animal refuge area and found Eliana. She showed us our site and we started setting up camp. It was around 95 degrees.

Our second day was spent sun/heat proofing the rig and site. Also, did some laundry and was able to dry it outside on the clothesline next door. I don't know how many years it's been since I could do that! Went shopping at the local Walmart and stopped at a hardware store in Truth or Consequences (or "T or C" as the locals call it). No Home Depots or Lowes here. Closest Wells Fargo Bank is 40 minutes away.
Our third day (today) was our first work day. We were scheduled for AM and PM animal care training. Started at 8:00am. Met with Sharon, who was taking care of the dogs, and received our assignments. I was to learn the birds and cats routine with Jennifer while Bob was to learn the ins and outs of dog walking with Pat. Both Jennifer and Pat live about an hour south and volunteer their time every week!
Likes: Everyone we've met so far is very friendly and helpful. Willie gets to chase the occasional rabbit. It's very quiet. There's hardly any people here and there is zero traffic. The view out the back window is fabulous. We feel comfortable with the environment (feels like home). We think we can make a difference here with our contributions.
Dislikes: It's hot. Kind of buggy (flies and other pesky moth thingies). Hot. Smelly in the cat area. Hot. Oh and it's hot.
I think the Likes have it! Yeah!!! Here's the link to Desert Haven Animal Refuge.
It doelook like home. (here) The weather is probably about the same althought we did get a little rain over the the couple of days
ReplyDeleteMet up with an old friend near Bridgeport, camped and fished for two days. Was a nice break. Then went down to Bishop on the bike and had a mini Sturgis reunion and somehow pulled off "Hangover Three" while we were there. Things are still a little fuzzy. Took them into the Mammoth Ski area the next day and while enjoying the views, we were approached by a Forest Servive employee that asked to take our picture with the bikes. Turns out Mono Coiunty is trying to promote motorcycling in the area and we may end up as the poster children n their website.
Not much else going on, working and trying to remodle the two upstairs bathrooms. What was I thinking?
Hope all is well and life is good!
Bob
Thanks for the update. Always good to hear from you. We think of you often and miss you lots!
DeletePut a sun hat on Willie as he chases rabbits! Hope all goes well. We are set up at Mountain States Children's Home with 11 other rigs. We've worked this week on get a gym full of stuff ready for the fundraiser auction. I think we miss the nice setting of Echo Basin but nice to move on to new things. Enjoy your time @ Desert Haven.
ReplyDeleteHard to beat the nice setting of Echo Basin!!!
DeleteHey guys! Glad you made is safely and are all settled in. Hang in there, it should start cooling down soon, although the New Mexico sun is always quite warm - especially when you are subjected to an area with no/limited shade.
ReplyDeleteWe look forward to hearing more about your adventures at the Desert Haven and getting together again this month or next.
