Let’s see…We arrived and set up camp on Tuesday August 6th. Wednesday morning Ranger Tom stopped by to meet with us. It was a very informal meeting. We got the particulars of the volunteer position and commented that it all seemed too easy. We started that very afternoon. Then we went to the beach!!!
It took us four or five days to work out the best way to clean the camp sites. Ranger Tom checked in with us often to see if we had questions, concerns or if we needed additional tools or equipment. We requested a leaf rake and a gas powered leaf blower. And he supplied both! Bob was VERY surprised with the blower! We were a bit disappointed to find we were not provided with any means of transportation (like a golf cart) to move us and our stuff around the campground. Well, walking is good for you, right?
The park has split the camp sites located adjacent to the beach into three pods. We are the hosts for Pod One and are responsible for sites 1 through 60. The camp hosts from Pod Two found us on our second day, introduced themselves and invited us to the weekly volunteer pot luck the following Monday. Interaction with other volunteers and park rangers is extremely limited and we work and live on our own most of the time. It’s great!
So what do we do when we aren’t cleaning sites and picking up litter and dog poo two hours a day five days a week? We take our dogs to the beach, walk the trails in the park, visit the lighthouse and the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center, and talk to campers that wonder by or knock on our door.
Here’s some pictures…
Off to the beach, less than a minute’s walk from our rig!
The beach is filled with crabs, dead crabs, not live ones!
Foxie has decided she like munching on crab legs, shell and all!
What happened to her other leg???
North Head Lighthouse gives tours daily. We waited for a sunny day…
Enough for today??? Guess we’ll head to the boat ramp where we can get 4G service to update the blog. Yes, you guessed it, cell service is iffy in the campground and that’s how we get our internet service. We purchased a cable extension and Bob made an antenna extension from grey PVC pipe. Our connectivity improved but it’s still not good enough to update to the blog. BUT I’m so happy being close to the beach and ocean that I’m willing to deal with it for eight weeks!
Happy at the beach in fog, wind or rain… :-)
