The weather is always a surprise here. Will it be foggy? Sunny? Windy or rainy? One never knows. Notice I didn't mention the temperature. It pretty much is constant with a 10 or so degree spread. High 50’s to high 60’s. Nice (no really, not cold!!!) Had a beautiful sunny morning one day and before we knew it the fog dropped in before noon. So we take what we get (like there’s a choice) and make it a point to take advantage of the outdoors when the sun appears. We've become more spontaneous as a result.
International Kite Festival…Long Beach WA (It was a nice windy day)
Salmon fishing on the Columbia (not us, we just drove by…) Still, Bob was fascinated by all the boats!
A must see - Columbia River Maritime Museum, Astoria, OR
The Lightship Columbia is a floating lighthouse and a tour of it was included with our museum ticket. It was anchored five miles out at sea from 1951 to 1979 to mark the entrance to the Columbia River. I found the tour highly interesting.
The Coast Guard rocks
The Astoria-Megler Bridge…The 1,232 foot main span is the longest “continuous truss” in the world.
We took a day to explore the Long Beach peninsula. It’s continuous sand beaches extend for 28 miles!
Guess it was pretty boring cuz Bob was caught talking to statues!
I had seen an advertisement for Jack’s Country Store, established 1885, and decided we must visit it. jackscountrystore.com They boast their shelves (and rafters) are filled with over 220,000 different items. It was everything they promised and more. They had a huge selection of oil cloth which could be purchased by the yard and I bought a pretty lavender print for a tablecloth. Wasn’t long before it was time for lunch, so after we wandered around Jack’s Country Store, the checker recommended Great Day Café in Ocean Park. It was a bit of a challenge to find it and it was a tiny, little place BUT the food was excellent! This is their map…
At the most northern tip of the peninsula is Leadbetter Point State Park. A bit of a letdown; dogs not allowed on the trails and at low tide, the view was filled with mud flats. The sign was cool though…
The mud flats…
We stopped in Oysterville, not that we like oysters but because the heart of town is on the National Register of Historic Places. Guess we were getting tired at that point because we stopped taking pictures! I kind of wanted to stop at the Cranberry Museum but Bob wasn’t having any of that! We did spy several cranberry fields (or maybe they’re called bogs, who knows? Should have gone to the museum).
Well I have so many more pictures of other expeditions outside the park I’ll just have to do another post…
