Still at Cape D but leaving next Tuesday heading for Battle Ground State Park north of Vancouver/Portland area where we will camp host for the month of October.
Better finish up with the sightseeing photos… This area is big on the Lewis and Clark expedition and me, not being big on history, will just note the places we went without the history lesson…
The view west from Dismal Nitch includes the Astoria-Megler bridge along with pilings from who knows what.
Time for lunch! (As Bob would say what’s new) Had to try the highly recommended Bowpicker in Astoria for fish and chips. And you better want fish and chips cuz they don’t serve anything else! Bob surely didn't believe that an old boat was the restaurant!!!
It is so popular there’s a always a line starting before they open at 11:00. The fish is Albacore tuna and it was indeed very good.
Next stop the Astoria Column in Astoria. An Italian artist created this unique work of art in 1926. Lucky for us the tower has 164 steps to get us to the top!
Wouldn't have visited this one but for Julie’s dad, Bob suggesting we go, buy a balsa wood plane for a buck and toss it off the top…Thanks Bob!
Astoria and the bridge as viewed from atop the tower.
You know after awhile all the forts start to look alike…Bob says it’s because they had the same designer. Fort Stevens State Park is in Oregon directly across the mouth of the Columbia River from Cape Disappointment. It has one of the nation’s largest campgrounds, a swimming lake, an historic shipwreck and military area, museum and gun batteries.
Wreck of the “Peter Iredale” (oh and Willie running)
View of the Columbia River and a passing ship.
Hopefully I can talk Bob into making one more trip to Astoria before we leave so we can check out the Astoria Market (dogs allowed) and visit another fort, Fort Clatsop.
Until then…
Nice pictures. It looks like you guys are having a good time! I got my 'mail order bride' from Battle Ground! lol
